God Squad launches Kindle rival

It seems the latest battle in the war between American evangelicals and the forces of darkness will be fought on the digital page. Citizens Raging Against Porn, a group drawn from followers of the Church of the Latterday Holy Adventists, is to launch The Good E-Book, a Wi-Fi reading device modelled on Amazon's Kindle, which removes all "unsuitable content".

Says Church spokesman Ezekiel K Handleschniffer, "As true believers, we do not want harlotry, atheism, murderation and the like vomited into our eyes by the ungodly.

"That is why we are launching The Good E-Book, in a bid to stem the tide of filth from these whorish, so-called 'writers'."

The Good E-Book is programmed to seek out key phrases such as "abortion" or "garrotte" from a massive database. When it encounters them, sophisticated software rewrites the offending passage, so for instance, references to "magic" in Harry Potter books are replaced with "God's work", while sex scenes are replaced with those involved discussing the importance of waiting until marriage.

The Good E-Book is set for release this summer, priced $220.
