AMD launches Puma platform with Turion X2 Ultra CPUs — garrowel

Filed under:

While you won’t fine a “Puma” sticker anywhere at Computex, rest assured that AMD’s latest laptop platform is now official. Instead you’ll be looking for AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core processors, the 780 chipset, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000-series graphics on the manufacturer’s spec sheet. Come to think of it, a sticker on the 100 or so Puma laptops lined up from HP, Dell, Acer, Asus and others might be easier to spot when the new lappies hit the market as early as this week.

The HTC Touch Pro

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/The_HTC_Touch_Pro_a_QWERTY_Diamond’; Call it Raphael no longer! HTC has officially thrown the cover off its Touch Pro today — the QWERTY slider sibling of the recently-unveiled Touch Diamond — which should cover the bases for those who loved the Diamond’s keen looks but decided they’d go our of their gourds without a full set of physical keys at their disposal. Under that glossy black shell lies WiFi, HSPA with a solid 7.2Mbps on the downstream, Bluetooth, 2.8-inch VGA display, Windows Mobile 6.1 featuring HTC’s TouchFLO 3D interface, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a half gig of ROM, and 288MB of RAM. It’s not going to win any “world’s thinnest” records with an 18.05mm waistline, but those five rows of textual healing don’t come without a price. The first batch of devices will be Europe-bound in “late summer” with 900 / 2100MHz 3G alongside the quadband GSM and EDGE; North and Latin American versions are promised for later in the year.

Duke micro-bots learning to dance, probe cellular architectures

Filed under:

We won’t even front: Duke’s quasi-invisibility cloak is far cooler than this, but a team of microscopic robots sure have the potential to do more good than a glorified figment of someone’s imagination. Bruce Donald, a Duke professor of computer science and biochemistry, has teamed up with a few other mad scientists in order to create ridiculously tiny robots that can dance on objects smaller than a pin’s head. According to Mr. Donald, they are “almost 100 times smaller than any previous robotic designs of their kind and weigh even less.” Sure, watching these critters do the tango is undoubtedly entertaining, but he’s hoping to collaborate with the medical center in order to “probe the molecular and cellular architectures of very small things such as cells.” We appreciate the dedication to mankind and all, but don’t pretend like you don’t goof off with these guys on your coffee breaks, Bruce.

Wal-Mart throws in $100 gift card with Blu-ray player purchase

Given that $100 at Wal-mart is essentially as good as cash, we can only imagine how titillating this offer may seem for Blu-ray holdouts. Announced today, the mega-retailer will be offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player from June 8th through 14th — and yes, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is included. In case this wasn’t enough to maybe-possibly get the general public to actually pay attention to the format, Wally World will also sell “select” BD titles for $15 starting on the 8th. Since the format war ended earlier this year, we’ve seen report after report proclaiming that Blu-ray adoption just wasn’t taking off here in America, but with a theoretical net price now close to $200 (albeit for a few days only), we can certainly see the masses taking notice at long last.

Xandros announces support for Intel’s Moblin platform

Filed under:

Intel’s Moblin tech is getting some big love at Computex — first Canonical dropped the Ubuntu Netbook Remix on us, and now Xandros has announced plans to support the MID- and netbook-targeted system additions in future editions of its Linux distros. If that seems a little confusing, it’s because it is — Moblin was never supposed to be a standalone Linux OS, but rather a standardized Linux core stack designed to maximize the potential of Atom-based mobile devices. Of course, one of those mobile devices is a little machine called the Eee that just happens to run Xandros, so it looks like Eee owners should look forward to better battery life, faster booting, and “expanded Internet and media capabilities.” Now the real question: is that enough to get people to stay away from the recently-revived-again Windows XP?

Pure Digital unveils Flip Mino for smaller, sexier crap videos

Pure Digital is following up its Flip Video Ultra, and not a moment too soon. With Creative’s Vado breathing down its neck, it was no surprise when we saw the Flip Mino surface in some leaked photos last month, and now it’s gone all official-like. The Flip Mino will retail for $180, and uses a built-in rechargeable battery instead the AA cells of its predecessor. It managed to shave off 40 percent of the Video Ultra’s size in the process, but the same 60 minutes of VGA video capacity are still intact. No word on exactly when this’ll be available, but we’re guessing it’s soon.
