The week in tech

The big news of the week is that Apple has finally confirmed the 3G iPhone. Following months of rumour, speculation, hearsay, conjecture, and a few half truths. And it doesn’t really look very different. Still, it’s what’s on the inside that matters. And there’s a lot on the inside, including 3G and GPS. No front-mounted camera, though. It’s even got a whole lot cheaper, even free. Which we love.

Motorola’s launching a movie download service, but what’s this, no over the air downloads straight to your phone? Come on Moto, Nokia’s been doing it ages. Get with the program.

The UK’s slipping down the broadband league table . If we were The Sun we’d have a rant about rip-off Britain, but we’re not, so we’ll spare you that. Just jumble these buzz phrases to make your own instant half-thought opinion: political correctness gone mad, rip-off Britain, Euro bureaucrats, hands off Our Boys. Or something to that effect.

Canon’s EOS 1000D is a mighty big camera. It looks like the kind of thing paparazzi would use. Or stalkers. Even the name is big - look at all those zeroes. Cor!

Sony is getting into bed with Napster and 7 Digital for a musical threesome . Which makes a change, seeing as it usually loves sleeping alone.

Bloody hell - Sony Ericsson has an 8-megapixel camera phone in the offing! Eight! That’s three more than five, which really is quite enough for a camera - how often do you actually print them, let alone big enough to take advantage of all those megapixels? Still, expect other phone makers to follow, like idiots modding their cars.

The BBC is putting its archive online. We’re hoping this means every show it’s ever made - we want to see the news from December 13th 1988. For no particular reason.

But forget about iPhones and 8-megapixel camera mobiles - the big news is that Play.com is selling aFlux Capacitor. And if you don’t want one, you really can’t call yourself a man, in our eyes.

Is Apple’s iCar in a German auto magazine? Probably not.

Filed under:

Sure, we’ve heard rumors about a possible iCar before, but it’s not every day that a German auto magazine (Autobild, in this case) throws some wacky VW concept with an iPod touch floating above it on its cover. We know that the two companies have colloborated in the past, with old Jobsy and Volkswagen head Martin Winterkorn supposedly sipping brandy and regaling each other with tales of their salad days, but up until now the closest we’ve seen to an actual product was that Space Up! blue concept interior from back in November of last year. Will you finally have the perfect set of wheels to dock your iPhone on the go? Doubtful… but feel free to dream.

Motorola research cut in half, boat keeps on sinking

Filed under:

Not that Motorola’s had an abundance of innovative consumer products in the last few years, but what forward movement the company’s research labs has been making is about to be severely stunted. Moto announced today that it’ll be cutting its research group in about half — down to about 300 employees — as well as moving 180 others employees and dropping some unnamed projects. We don’t necessarily think this is a bad thing, though; given Moto’s state right now, they need development a hell of a lot more than they do research.

Sony’s Wiimote competitor to come as break-apart DualShock 3?

So GamesIndustry’s got word that Sony’s supposedly-forthcoming Wiimote competitor is taking shape as something that sounds a lot like a break-apart DualShock 3, which would split down the middle and be used as two independent halves. Because that’s really what the PS3 needs, is another kind of controller. Seriously, do they really think any new device will be greeted warmly by the PlayStation fans they first disappointed with the SIXAXIS, and then bullied into paying $55 for a DualShock 3 (and only because they spent so much time fighting Immersion over the money they clearly owed in the first place)? There’s a chance we could find out at this year’s E3 if this controller really is in the works, but it’s a small one as they’re still trying to help people get over the DualShock 3 hump, after all.

EFiX wants to bring OSX86 to the masses

Word in the OSX86 world is that a new product will revolutionize (and simplify) the process of installing OS X on a PC — and that product is called the EFiX. The USB dongle allegedly pops into a free port and allows you to install the retail version of the Mac operating system on just about any system by automatically locating the proper hacks and drivers needed. Famed OSX86 hacker Netkas has demoed a beta unit on video (which you can see after the break) and claims that it’s working as it should. The manufacturer is aiming to have models available for purchase by June 23rd… barring any more “sabotage.” This sounds like a much more reasonable solution than marketing a Mac clone — feel free to send one our way whenever you like guys.

How would you change Wii Fit?

Filed under:

Okay, so you’ve had ample time now to shed a few pounds courtesy of Wii Fit. Whether or not you’ve been diligent enough to stick with it is another thing. Regardless of your level of dedication, we’re certain there’s a few things Nintendo could have done differently to make the entire experience a bit better. Heck, our own Ryan Block has already chimed in with a few things that he would like to see tweaked, so what’s stopping you? Post up your comments while training for bonus points.

Analyst foresees PS3 gaining momentum, Xbox 360 price cut at E3

Filed under:

Things have been relatively quiet on the Xbox 360 price-cut front as of late, but EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has now thankfully come through and stirred the pot a bit, saying that he thinks Microsoft is set to make an announcement about a price cut at E3 this July. That, he says, would be in response to the PlayStation 3’s steady growth, which he expects to continue to out pace the 360, aided in no small part by exclusive titles like Metal Gear Solid 4. As if that wasn’t enough speculation for you, Divnich further goes on to say that if Microsoft does in fact cut the price of the 360, Sony would likely follow suit with a price cut of its own within two months.
