If you’re not snoozin’ by the end of this one, clearly you haven’t been paying attention to just how many humdrum digiframes have been pumped out over the past six months or so. Nevertheless, NuTouch’s 7-inch Touch Frame does manage to stand out somewhat in the legions of mediocre alternatives, as the sleek, glossy black frame gets complemented with an array of touch-sensitive controls, built-in stereo speakers and integrated MP3 player. The panel packs a 800 x 480 resolution, and furthermore, you’ll find 128MB of storage, a multicard reader, internal battery, clock / calendar functions and USB connectivity. Still, we can’t help but balk at the £139 ($273) price tag — then again, we are dealing with the declining-by-the-second greenback here.

That’s a bold promise AMD. Nevertheless, a cinema-realistic gaming experience is exactly what they demonstrated yesterday in San Francisco. Cinema 2.0, according to AMD, is “a milestone achievement in ultra-realistic and interactive visual computing.” Perhaps, but then the marketing-speak launches into unnecessary hyperbole with AMD calling its new teraFLOPS chip at the heart of the demo — the
RV770 GPU — “more powerful than every generation of game console every brought to market combined.” Really AMD? Last we counted there were about 13 million Cell processors scattered across the PS3 terra firma. But we’ll assume that you’re referring to a mythical mashup of a singular PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, etc. with a little Magnavox Odyssey sprinkled on top. Still, you might find the hype warranted when you realize that the demonstration was powered by a single PC loaded with a pair of (future) consumer-grade AMD RV770 graphics cards,
Phenom X4 9850 processor, and 790FX chipset. Take a look for yourself in the video after the break.

Judging by the multitude of problems experienced by Area-51 m15x owners, we can’t say we’d recommend said laptop without reservations, but those dead set on picking one up now have yet another design option to choose from. Yeah, the sleek Ripley motif is peachy for the milder sect, but those seeking something a bit more flamboyant will certainly appreciate the new Skullcap option (pictured). Initially, Skullcap will only be offered as a free option in silver, but if demand necessitates, we can certainly envision the company busting out the paint gun.

Touted at CES as the MediaSmart Receiver, the re-dubbed MediaSmart Connect is finally available for pre-order. Just as we heard before, this unit takes full advantage of Extender for Windows Media Center technology, and although it possesses no internal storage space, it will pull in digital media from around your home (and a variety of online media outlets) and pipe it straight to your HDTV. The unit plays nice with other UPnP- and DLNA-compliant devices and includes 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an Ethernet port, HDMI / component jacks and support for MPEG2/4, DivX, XviD, WMV, MP3, WMA, AAC, JPEG and BMP files (among others). Prospective buyers can get their order in today for $349.

Famed chip maker Intel is doing more than just buying up Renewable Energy Certificates like they’re going out of style. It’s cranking things up with a spin-off outfit that will soon be creating photovoltaic cells for solar module makers. Intel Capital is pouring some $50 million into SpectraWatt Inc., and it’s being joined by Cogentrix Energy, PCG Clean Energy and Technology Fund and Solon AG. Aside from making that dough, the new company will also “concentrate development efforts on improvements in current manufacturing processes and capabilities to reduce the cost of photovoltaic energy generation,” and if everything goes smoothly, it should break ground on its manufacturing and development facility in Oregon in 2H 2008 (with product shipping in mid-2009).

LaCie introduced the Little Big Disk Quadra back in January, but the diminutive four-interface dual-drive enclosure is getting a new 1TB sibling today. Nothing new here apart from the capacity bump, but if you’re into the aluminum RAID 0 scene, $700 is all you need to ride.
