Sony, where’s the justice? How could you mercilessly kill the nine month old PSP Extended Life Battery Kit — capable of boosting the PSP’s play time by up to 80% — while UMDs continue to be the preferred method of distribution for the system’s games and video content (thereby also heavily contributing to the device’s juice-drain)? Worse still for Sony, why are we not surprised?

Motorola declares white space device testing successful

Motorola is claiming success in the latest round of FCC white space device testing, countering Microsoft’s numerous failed attempts. “It worked as well as we said it would,” said Motorola’s Steve Sharkey. So there. Motorola’s device is mostly based on its geolocation capabilities, which in addition to its “sensing” tech allow it to know where which spectrum is being used by digital TV in that particular area and avoid it proactively. Sharkey calls the tech “absolute, solid protection,” which should make members of the white space coalition happy — though we haven’t heard positive word from Philips, Adaptrum and InfoComm yet, who were also testing devices alongside Motorola, but aren’t using the geolocation technology. That, and the FCC has the final word on all of this, so we’ll just have to wait for that word from on high before we start riotous, interference free partying in the streets.

Artificial pancreas developed, twice as cool as your boring real one

We’ve never really found much use for our pancreas. It doesn’t comes up in conversation, and tends to be a bit of a non-entity when it comes to our social life. Still, some people have a bit more trouble with their pancreai, and for those folks the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is working on an artificial pancreas to do the job. It’s based around existing technology for monitoring and moderating blood sugar levels, but “closes the loop,” scratching out human error by feeding monitoring data, computer predictions and insulin injections into one system that doesn’t require human intervention. To start out, the foundation plans on creating a product aimed at regulating blood-sugar overnight, and then from there move on to a ’round the clock device.

How would you change HTC’s Advantage X7510?

There’s no denying that HTC’s Advantage X7510 fills a narrowing niche — after all, how many of these things have you seen out and about in the subway / underground? Still, there’s just something very enticing about a 5-inch VGA display, built-in GPS, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth and a full-blown QWERTY keyboard, is there not? For you folks who plunked down quite a few bills in order to bring this home, how has your experience been? For you folks in America who have just recently decided to bite the bullet and jump in, was it worth it? How would you tweak this do-it-all conglomerate (besides making it way more affordable)? Another flexible circuit project emerges, carbon nanotubes to blame

Yeah, we get it, flexible electronics — sans application — are about as exciting as the circuitry under your keyboard. But it’s Friday, and this here story has real-live carbon nanotubes, so you know it’s a winner. Takao Someya of the University of Tokyo has built for himself a stretchy, flexible conducting material using carbon nanotubes mixed with a polymer. The nanotubes are mixed into a compound called “bucky gel” to prevent clumping, and after some rubber-like flourinated copolymer is mixed in and it’s all poured onto a glass plate, holes are punched in the material to better flexibility. Apparently it ends up looking a bit like a nylon stocking, but we won’t hold that it against it, since it can be stretched up to 38%, while also managing to be 100 times more conductive than any other elastic material. The possibilities for such technology is pretty much endless, but we’d say “nylon stocking that is also, conveniently, a computer” is the first product category worth felling.

Freewheeler speaker is wireless, round, and really expensive

Just because you can put a speaker in all sorts of form factors doesn’t really mean you should. Take, for instance, the Freewheeler wireless speaker. Measuring in at 22.8 x 9.8-inches, the rolly sound producer will operate at up to 656-feet from its base station and includes an FM receiver. Doesn’t sound so bad, right? Hold off, kiddos — this thing sells for about $21,000. Yeah. Twenty one. Thousand. That said, the thing is completely wireless and will run on a single charge for about 8 hours, so if you have some swanky garden with swanky guests and you want some swanky speakers, here’s your thing. Otherwise, we have a nice set over here in this white van. Just for you.

D-Link busts out “Green Ethernet” energy-saving firmware for existing routers

D-Link’s been sipping power of late with its newish DWA-643 and DWA-556 desktop “Green Ethernet” switches, and now it’s shipping those power savings upstream to its DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit router and DIR-855 dual channel routers with freely downloadable firmware updates. We’d scoff, but that’s a power savings of 32 percent and 41 percent, respectively. It might only shave a few cents off those electric bills, but hey, you can always melt that copper down to make arrows for the coming apocalypse.

Hoshino debuts “biodegradable” FD-300 flash drive

It’s far from the first company to attempt to make a more environmentally-friendly flash drive, but given the near disposable nature of them these days, that’s not exactly a bad thing. This latest drive from Hong Kong-based Hoshino also takes a decidedly different approach than other drives that simply keep the hazardous chemicals and whatnot to a minium, with it actually constructed out of polylactide (or PLA) made from corn that is, technically, biodegradable. The downside is that in order for it to be broken down, PLA needs to be blasted with heat for ten days on end at a specialized facility, which isn’t exactly the most direct route back into the ground, or an accessible option for everybody at the moment (there’s also the small matter of it being based on a food product). The drive also apparently isn’t available to the general public just yet, but companies interested in doing business with Hoshino can contact ‘em for more details.

NASA might bring plasma rocket to ISS for testing

Ad Astra’s VASIMR plasma rocket is about ready for testing, only problem is it requires the vacuum of space to do it in. NASA is now considering taking the rocket up to the International Space Station, clipping it on and firing her up — perhaps even using it to reposition the station. Formerly of NASA, Franklin Chang Diaz left to form Ad Astra and perfect his plasma rocket, which he hopes will be able to take space vehicles from low-earth orbit to the moon. The rocket draws its own power from solar cells, and then uses radio waves to heat argon into plasma, and directs that plasma using magnets. Pretty fancy stuff, and since the rocket is reusable and can propel payloads double the size of equivalent chemical engines, there could be cost savings in the long run. Right now it seems the main hang ups for NASA are where to attach the rocket to the ISS where it won’t be interfered with, and how to get it into space after the space shuttle is retired in 2010
