Art Lebedev’s Folderix flash drives are obvious, awesome

Filed under:

Lebedev’s design crew never seems to be short on surprisingly obvious and yet entirely fresh takes on every day objects, and the new Folderix flash drives are taking that ethic to entirely new and conveniently functional heights. The 4GB drives come in a myriad of colors, are available today and will run you a fairly steep $55. Literal folder design? Priceless.

Modder adds CCD eyepiece to binoculars, Bill Belichick seems interested

Oh sure, you’ve been able to buy digital camera-equipped binoculars for years now, but finding one that does video (particularly with the camcorder you already own) has been a continual struggle. Thanks to one engineering soul, you can forge ahead with your plans to video all sorts of sights by adding a CCD eyepiece to any ‘ole set of binoculars. Once installed, you simply hook up your camcorder (hope it has video in), mash record and get to gazing. Be careful what you look for, though.

ZPower promises to deliver Silver-Zinc laptop batteries in 2009

Filed under:

ZPower has made a few promises before that haven’t exactly panned out, but that apparently hasn’t stopped it from making another bold claim at IDF this week, with it boasting that its newfangled Silver-Zinc battery will be rolled out in a “major notebook computer” sometime in 2009. According to ZPower, that battery will provide up to 40% more runtime than traditional lithium-ion batteries and, just as importantly, be far more “chemically stable” than its sometimes explosion-prone lithium-ion counterpart. ZPower also looks to be going the extra mile when it comes to recycling the batteries, with 95% of the battery itself apparently recyclable, and the company offering “financial discounts” to folks when they trade in their old Silver-Zinc batteries.

The editor-in-chief giveaway: Win Ryan Block’s gadgets

You know, when you’re the editor-in-chief of a site like Engadget, you tend to accumulate a lot of stuff. Companies send you all kinds of interesting promotional materials, gadgets, swag, etc. It’s great. Sometimes, though, you just let it pile up in your living room for years and years, then, when a new editor-in-chief takes over, you send all that stuff to him in about ten huge boxes. Luckily, we’ve got a way of dealing with this other than just throwing it in storage — we’re giving a ton of it away. That’s right, you could be one of the lucky readers to win a massive stash of gear recently jettisoned toward New York by Mr. Ryan Block. Here’s what’s up for grabs in this round:

Ooma VOIP box, Aliph Jawbone, Sansa e260 4GB PMP, Ramos RM550 1GB PMP, Enermax Caesar Aluminum Keyboard, SageTV Hauppauge Media Extender, Wowwee Butterfly, Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000, Microsoft Lifecam VX-5000, PSP A/V cable, Nikon 1GB flash drive, Trendset USB WiFi card, and more!

Interested? Here are the rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but a description of what percentage you plan to keep versus what you’ll have to sell off, or any fond memory of a Ryan Block post is good too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. That winner will get a massive amount of gadget related goods. Packages represent a brief history of Ryan Block’s tenure as editor-in-chief. Approximate value is incalculable (but no more than $600).
  • Entries can be submitted until Friday, August 29th, 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

It’s just been a few short days since Archos took the wraps off its new Archos 5 and Archos 7 “internet media tablets,” but if you’re already sold, you can now get your order in for one of ‘em on Amazon (and no doubt plenty of other places shortly). You can also take your pick from a range of accessories, including a DVR Snap-On or more full-fledged DVR Station ($80 and $100, respectively), a Battery Dock for $50, a Mini Dock for $30, and even a Helmet Camcorder for $130. Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player leaks out

Filed under:

Pioneer’s last batch of Blu-ray players wasn’t exactly earth-shattering, but if you’re in the market for the highest of the high-end, it sounds like the upcoming Elite BDP-09FD might be worth waiting for. The first Pioneer unit to support Profile 2.0 and BD-Live, you’ll also be getting 4GB of internal storage, eight independent D/A converters for each 7.1 channel (which means there are tons of receiver-caliber adjustments possible from the player), and 16-bit color output over two HDMI jacks. Should be out soon, for a whopping $2200.

How would you change Nokia’s E71?

Filed under:

Handset lovers in some regions of the world not named North America have been enjoying the luxuries of Nokia’s E71 for some time now, but those of us waiting around for a version compatible with 3G here on this side of the planet have just recently been able to indulge. Make no mistake, though — this piece of QWERTY goodness ain’t cheap. Ringing up at right around 500 bones, USers have the right to have some pretty high expectations, and we’re here to ask if those expectations have been met. Are you satified with the ultrathin smartphone? Is the display up to snuff? How’s that keyboard? Are you kosher with the white keys? What else would you do to improve upon the E71? Leave it all in comments below.

Conceptual question mark earbuds: can you say “production?”

Filed under:

Ah, concepts. They make us laugh, they make us weep. And in this instance, they make us proud of the human imagination. Designer Yoonsang Kim has provided an oh-so-subtle tweak to the common earbud, leaving each earpiece in the shape of a question mark. Besides looking fairly attractive in-ear, they can also loop together to make carrying them much simpler. For the clean freaks, the design also keeps bacterial growth to a minimum by removing those dark, damp corners so prevalent in traditional ‘buds. Seriously, how can these not see mass commercialization?

Some news from the (new) editor’s desk

As you already may know, today is Ryan Block’s last day as editor-in-chief of Engadget, and, consequently, the beginning of my tenure in that same position. If you’ve ever met Ryan, read his work here on the site (and you’d better have), or seen one of his appearances on television, then you know that he’s that rare kind of obsessive technology nerd who also happens to be incredibly erudite and funny. Along with founder Peter Rojas, he made Engadget what it is today, so while there’s no question that he’ll be missed here, we’ve got great expectations about his new project, and we’re happy to say he’ll remain on-board as editor-at-large for columns, advice, and picking up the tab when he’s in town.

All of that said, however, I’m incredibly excited about getting started on what tomorrow brings: the next phase of Engadget’s evolution. Stepping into the role that Ryan is vacating isn’t just about emulating the accomplishments that he and Peter worked for, but building off of those successes and bringing something new to the table, and you can be sure that’s what I plan on doing. Still, what’s core to Engadget won’t change, and we’ll continue to be the definitive voice in tech journalism thanks to the tireless work of our team (the best in the industry), and the dedication of the legions of readers that visit this site every day (also the best in the industry). It’s a huge honor and challenge to take the reins here, and I know it’s going to be an amazing ride.

New $199 Xbox 360 Arcade bundle rumored to include motion controller

Filed under:

We’ve already heard plenty of talk about about the Xbox 360 Arcade dropping to a mere $199, but a tipster to Xbox 360 Fanboy is now claiming that there’s more than just a price cut in store for the entry-level bundle, with it also supposedly in line to get a motion controller as a pack-in. According to the source, who’s supposedly “close to Microsoft’s marketing department,” the new bundle will include the usual Arcade games and 512MB memory card, as well as the forthcoming Fall update pre-installed, said motion controller, and some motion-controlled mini-games developed by Rare. Supposedly, it’ll be released in time for the 2008 Holiday season, which may or may not mean that it’s the same $199 Arcade bundle that’s rumored to be on track for a September release. That same source also says that the motion controller will be sold separately and bundled with an even more expansive list of games, but word on a price or release date for it seems to be a bit harder to come by.
