T-Mobile G1 phone hits 1.5 million pre-order sales

It has yet to hit the shelves, but the guys at Google must be rubbing their hands with glee as the G1 stirs up a commotion with T-Mobile customers to the sound of 1.5 million pre-order sales.

The mobile operator, the first to carry the G1 handset with the new Google Android operating system in the U.K, have scored impressive sales through their existing T-Mobile customers, ten days before the G1 gets an official release in shops.

For those non-T-Mobile customers who fear they might not be able to get in on the G1 action, the phone operator expects to have an extra 2 million handsets in the shops beginning October 22nd.

The early sales figures come as somewhat of a surprise for the handset which will carry a largely unproven operating system, but perhaps more for the reason in which the G1 is being marketed.

Google and T-Mobile have opted against an Apple-like marketing campaign dousing us in numerous television advertisements well before the release, instead waiting until the public can actually get their hands on the new handset, before embarking on spreading the Android word.

Apple may not as yet be quaking in their boots, but with such a vote of confidence before the G1 gets painted everywhere we turn, Google has 1.5 million reasons to be cheerful.
